What a Clarence! is the ninth episode of the seventh series of The Dark Railway Series.

PlotEdit

The move of Mr. Smash's workshop to Galen Junction is finally completed by October, with the final thing to arrive being 257 Squadron. He has been repainted back into his original BR malachite green, impressing Eustace greatly. Everyone is delighted to see him, especially Mr. Dark, who starts rostering him onto the railway's dining train, the Ventura.

One day, 257 is waiting at Colhapper when a diesel multiple unit pulls in on the opposite platform. The DMU is not pleased to see him, accusing him of taking over his station and claiming that diesels know their place and never go where they're not supposed to. This outrages both 257 and the engines at the shed, but before the argument can continue, the DMU leaves. Heading to the sheds, 257 learns that the DMU, who Barry calls "a right Clarence", has been rude to all of the DR engines and won't listen to reason.

Clarence continues with this behaviour until one day, 257 and Raymond are talking when they notice him coming into the station much too fast, shouting that his brakes have failed. He rolls right through the station and onto the Dark Railway's running line, much to his humiliation and the other engines' delight. He is left in the sheds for the rest of the day where he is teased by the other engines, and from that moment on, Clarence remains very tight lipped whenever he comes into Colhapper.
