Trepid is the second episode of the sixth series of The Dark Railway Series.

Plot

The engines are awaiting the arrival of the engineer coming to check them over, but Ed, 257 Squadron, and Repulse are worried about what their conditions will mean from them. Finally, the engineer arrives, and Repulse is relieved to discover that it is her restorer, Caracus Smash. He reveals that he is having his scrapyard refurbished to become a restoration facility, and in the meantime, he and his team will be based on the railway.

Mr. Smash spends the morning examining the engines, and returns later with Mr. Dark to have a closer look at some of them. Firstly, they address 257, telling him that his boiler will be need to be lifted out of his frames in order to be repaired. 257 panics, but they assure him that the work will be done at Mr. Smash's yard once it is ready in a few months. To cheer him up, they also inform him that Eustace, whose boiler ticket expires shortly, will be sent for overhaul at the same time, with Raymond and Turbo covering their runs. Next, they turn to Ed and Sid. As there is no paperwork for either of them, the two men ask the engines when they were last overhauled, and Ed lies by saying that he was given a new boiler in 1962.

Finally, Mr. Dark and Mr. Smash turn to Repulse. They inform her that while her damaged front axle can be repaired at Merecombe, she will be out of service for the forseeable future while a new tender for her is restored at Mr. Smash's yard, saddening her greatly. Mr. Smash declares the rest of the engines as fit for service, and he and Mr. Dark step to the front of the shed to make a formal announcement. He announces that services on the line shall resume in two weeks time and that a Grand Opening Steam Gala will be held, featuring several guests amongst other things. As they leave the shed, the engines happily discuss this news, while Repulse sits alone, still feeling gloomy and saddened.
