Tender Tantrum is the fourth episode of the fourth series of The Dark Railway Series.

Plot Edit

One day, Sir Eustace is berating Colin over a special train when Eddie defends him by pointing out it was a goods train. Eustace claims that he is much too important to pull goods trains, that he has never pulled one, and that his nameplates exempt him from it. Dave points out the flaws in his argument, also pointing out that Eustace always tries to get out of pulling them and that he is a mixed traffic engine, despite the Pacific's claims of being a passenger engine.

The following morning, Mr. Dark informs the engines that the turntable at Merecombe is out of action due to damage, so some engines will have to run backwards, much to Eustace's dismay. As he is prepared, his crew tell him that he is to take a special train. He doesn't fill up his tender with coal, even though he is rather low on it, and heads straight for the station, only to discover, to his horror, that the special is a mail train. Despite his insistance against it, he is coupled up to the train and waits in the platform, though he is delayed by 257 Squadron taking the express and is furious to discover that he will be stopping at every station. Eventually, Eustace is allowed to leave, and he bumps the coaches as he does so. The journey does not go well for Eustace, and his mood worsens when he is told to wait at Walschurch to allow Dave to pass through, and both Dave and Brian tease him.

Eventually, Eustace is allowed to leave again, but as he is crossing the viaduct, he bumps the mail coaches again. Having had enough of being bumped, the coaches surge into Eustace, causing his nearly empty tender to derail and bump along the side of the viaduct before coming to a stop. He remains there for the rest of the day, and the other engines grumble at him as they pass on the other line. Finally, Mr. Dark arrives and scolds Eustace severely. He tells Eustace that because of his attitude, he will pull no more coaches until he can be trusted after he returns from the works, and that his nameplates will be removed as well. Mr. Dark leaves, and Eustace is left wishing he hadn't been so stupid.
