James was a small tender engine who once worked on the Dark Railway.

Bio Edit

James was built at Ashford Works. It is unknown if he was originally built as a tank engine or not.

In 1954, James was brought to the Dark Railway along with 257 Squadron shortly after being overhauled. He became the line's main goods engine and worked on the line for a few years. Unfortunately, one cold misty night, James was taking a train to Galen Junction when he passed a signal at danger and collided with the back of 257's ballast train. The guard of the ballast train was killed, and James was damaged so severely that he passed away before 257 could bring the breakdown crane to help him. His remains were later scrapped, and the incident was so traumatising that 257 left the line shortly afterwards, though he returned several years later after being withdrawn.

Livery Edit

James was painted in BR lined black with the late crest. Prior to nationalisation, it is likely that he wore SR wartime black and SR olive green.

Basis Edit

James is based on a Southern Railway U Class 2-6-0. His number suggests that he may have originally been built as a SR K Class 2-6-4T, though this is unknown.

Trivia Edit

  • James' number was not one worn by an actual U Class, as their numbering scheme ended at 31809, but rather by a SR N Class, which were similar to the U's.
