Stan is a large mixed-traffic engine who lives on the Stovell Valley Railway. He is Dave's younger brother.

Bio[]

Stan was built on November 30th, 1937 at Armstrong Whitworth's works. Not much is known about his past, but he was very close to his brothers.

In 1950, Stan visited Birmingham for Christmas to see his brother, Dave. At this point, Dave was going through a severe bout of depression, and he finally broke down, venting everything on his brother. Dave was given permission to leave Birmingham after this, and headed with Stan to his then home on the island of New Wessex. However, Dave was transferred elsewhere in 1952. He was once again reunited with Dave in 1954 when Dave arrived at Repford Junction with an excursion train from Bath Green Park. Stan introduced Dave to fellow New Wessex engine Alfred, but when Falkland Islands arrived with a passenger train Stan instantly threatened to knock him off the rails when Falkland was making a comment about Dave replacing Bride of Lammermoor who had recently been sent for scrap.

After Dave had angrilly left Falkland Islands and Seaforth Highlander at New Harwick shed when they'd made rude comments about Stan, Stan introduced Dave to the western engines based at New Wessex aswell as fellow midland engine Max who had been rejected by Falkland, Frank and Seaforth for being built by the GWR at Swindon Works.

Stan continued to have many adventures with his friends and colleagues on New Wessex, and is sometimes loaned out to other railways to help out.

In 1969, Stan attended the Dark Railway's reopening steam gala along with an old friend of his, King Edward V. He was thrilled to be reunited with his brother, and at the end of his visit, he promised to ask his manager if Dave could visit him again sometime before departing. By 1976, he was running railtours across Britain, sometimes being stationed at Carnforth.

He returned to the DR in 1978 for another gala, accompanied by Gary. The pair received much attention from the others, making Barry jealous. At the end of the gala, Stan revealed that he was staying for an extended period, much to Dave's delight. This extended stay was due in part to issues on New Wessex preventing him from returning. During his stay, Stan agreed to help Dave overcome his fear of tunnels. The pair made occasional journeys to Colhapper Tunnel, with Stan providing encouragement as Dave tried to make progress going inside. Stan finally helped Dave conquer his fear altogether, and was praised by the other engines for his strong bond with his brother. As time wore on, Dave and Stan began planning a trip to New Wessex, but they were disappointed to learn they wouldn't be able to go for the time being.
